COVID-19 is associated with clinically significant weight loss and risk of malnutrition, independent of hospitalisation: A post-hoc analysis of a prospective cohort study

Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of a prospective observational cohort study to determine the incidence of unintended weight loss and malnutrition in COVID-19 survivors.

The study included adult patients (age ≥ 18 years) with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 who were discharged home from either a health center or the emergency department of San Raffaele University Hospital, and who were re-evaluated after remission of COVID-19 on an outpatient basis.

Follow-up clinic at the same facility from April 7, 2020, to May 11, 2020.

The analysis was performed on 213 patients (33% women, mean age 59.0 [49.5–67.9] years, 70% overweight). / obesity at an initial estimate, 73% in hospital).

Weight loss> 5% of baseline body weight was reported in 61 patients (29% of the total and 31% of hospitalized patients versus 21% of patients treated at home).

In multivariate logistic regression analysis, only disease duration was identified as an independent predictor of weight loss, highlighting the important role of disease severity and inflammation.

According to the findings, COVID-19 may negatively affect body weight and nutritional status. They highlight the importance of assessing, counseling, and treating diet in COVID-19 patients during initial screening, during illness, and after clinical remission.
